Protein-Driven Biomaterials: Advancing Hydrogels and Microgels for Bio-Applications Luai R. Khoury Neubauer Assistant Professor

Abstract
Proteins, with their unmatched biochemical diversity, structural adaptability, and tunable properties, are revolutionizing the field of biomaterials. In this seminar, we explore the transformative potential of protein-driven materials, showcasing their evolution from bulk hydrogels to finely engineered microgels. By harnessing the intricate folding nanomechanics of proteins and their synergistic interactions with synthetic polymers like polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), our research has unlocked a new class of stimuli-responsive systems with broad applications. Highlights include enzyme-triggered bovine serum albumin (BSA)-based hydrogels for controlled drug release and shape morphing [1], transparent protein-polymer lenses capable of tunable focal adjustments [2], and microgels synthesized using a porous medium emulsification approach inspired by techniques like espresso brewing [3]. These advances integrate dynamic responsiveness, mechanical robustness, and biocompatibility, addressing challenges in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and bio-optics. By bridging proteins’ nanoscale precision with practical functionality, this research showcases the versatility of protein-based materials and their potential to drive innovation in biomedical engineering and material science
