Computational Model for Saccadic Suppression Trigger and Ego-Motion Detection – Based on Neuronal Mechanism

Abstract

The perception of stability during rapid eye movements is achieved through a mechanism known as saccadic suppression. This effect and its various manifestations have been described over the past 50 years, yet its underlying mechanism and physiological trigger have not yet been deciphered. Here, we propose a computational model for motion detectors that play a significant role in generating the smear (blurred response) that occurs during saccades. This motion model consists of spatiotemporal detectors that respond to the onset and offset of a signal. The new approach emphasizes the importance of detecting stimuli in the offset condition and in the onset condition. Such spatiotemporal detectors could prove beneficial for detecting motion (to be discussed in a future study), signalling ego motion, and contributing to saccadic suppression triggering. The model illustrates a parsimonious computation of differentiating ego motion from real motion, which also offers simple methods for extracting motion tracking properties. This contribution is suggested for supplying better comprehension of the saccadic suppression and detection in the visual system and also is suggested for supplying better algorithms for motion and tracking motion-tracking in engineering discipline.
